BRIGHTER THAN THE SUN
04.10.25-27.09.26
Lyndi Sales
Lyndi Sales (RSA, 1973) works with the subconscious and is strongly influenced by natural sciences. Her works are an expression of Sales’ inner dreamworld. At the same time they have a strong resemblance to scientific phenomena such as crystals and explosions. When constructing the pieces Sales’ surrender herself to the art, in an effort to make the invisible visible, and surpass the limits of the everyday. According to Sales it can be possible, by surrendering to intuition and energies, to feel who you truly are.
Seeing beyond the visible spectrum is also a process of surrendering. For me, surrendering to our personality traits, surrendering to what the future brings, surrendering to our physical bodies by ultimately feeling that internal and external energy that is actually who we truly are. - Lyndi Sales
The title of the exhibition Brighter Than the Sun reflects Sales’ interest in the sun as a mystical object. The unexplainable is inspiring to Sales, given her experiences with plant medicine and hallucinations. She is drawn to the phenomena of ‘divine light’, as experiencing divine light is something that cannot be explained. Light does not exist without shadow, similar to the contrasts between positive and negative energy; dream and reality; masculine and feminine. Sales describes how her works consist of fragments of herself – if you are drawn to one of her works, perhaps one of the fragments actually belongs to you?
The whole purpose of your journey here in this lifetime is really to gather back our fragments so that we can become whole again. - Lyndi Sales
In the process of making her works, Lyndi Sales surrenders herself to repetitive work, when she in a meditative process paints and cuts thousands of paperstrips, before gluing them together in intricate compositions. The process follows her emotional state and her inspiration comes from both dreams, experiences, and natural phenomena.
Lyndi Sales is an internationally acknowledged artist based in South Africa. For 20 years she has worked with installations and artworks and has displayed her art across the globe. In 1995 Sales got a BA in Fine Arts and in 2000 she got a MA in Fine Arts both from the University of Cape Town. Sales represented South Africa in 2011 at the 54th Venice Biennale.
