The visual artistic expression of collage branches out into a myriad of genres, but common to all is the technique, where composite elements of widely differing materials are glued on a solid background in layers. Collage artists use everything from newspaper and magazine clippings to photographs and three-dimensional objects. In this way they create a wealth of structures, put elements together in surprising ways and show the selection of our past, contemporary and future.

Today, artists still use the techniques of the collage, and Museum for Papirkunst can now present: Memories Attached: Collage as craft with Anne Misfeldt (b. 1971).

Misfeldt graduated from Kolding School of Design and has illustrated both printed and woven textiles for many years. She works as an art craftsman, illustrator, and an art educator and has exhibited on several platforms around the world.

“With love for the tactility of materials, I primarily work with analoge collage. I use vintage materials such as old papers, books, magazines, and photographs and strive to create coherence between the tactile and the visual. It’s always about getting the right connections between the paper, the images, and the narratives. The artistic process can start with a word, a letter or an image with an “unknown“ story that kicks off the imagination.” - Anne Misfeldt.

The collage technique can be traced all the way back to the origin of the paper, but it was the surrealists who started using the technology at the beginning of the 20th century. With collage, they could create unexpected encounters between materials, make sharp societal comments and show sensory narratives. They turned the art upside down and gave it a new life and expression.

Anne Misfeldt’s practice revolves around the relationship between people and our stories. We all have stories and memories to share with each other. She draws inspiration from the moments captured in photographs and transforms them into visual poems. Poems that speak to something human. The many layers, stories and people - our untold memories, feelings, and secrets - are the ones she tries to capture in her art and craft.

“Like the photo, I try to capture a moment of my life and that of others; make visual poems with personal narratives” - Anne Misfeldt.
